Chapter 12

WES STIFLED A YAWN, then leaned forward in the waiting room chair to stretch his back. It had been a long, tiring day. The rest of the neurology patients were gone. The fact that his mother was still being examined could be a good thing, he told himself.

Or a bad thing.

He was still marveling over the earlier scene where his dad had walked into the room when his mom was freaking out, and instantly, she was better. That was so cool. If he could have that with someone someday, his life would be complete.

Who was he kidding? Not with someone—with Meg. But before they could grow old and senile together, he needed to convince her to go out with him.

Randolph came out of the exam area into the waiting room looking a little less polished than when he’d arrived—the day had taken a toll on him as well.

Wes stood and walked over to the reception desk where his father had stopped.

“Is Mom done?”

“Yes,” Randolph said, glancing around the empty waiting room.

“Carlotta had to go pick up Prissy from school, and Birch went with her to get dinner started. Coop had to get back to the morgue, so I thought I’d stick around to, you know, see if I could… help.”

His dad’s smile made the hours of waiting worthwhile. “Thanks, son. Your mom will be out in a few minutes. I still need to fill out these forms for insurance,” he said, gesturing to a pile of paper. Do you want to bring the car around to the front of the medical center?”

“Sure,” Wes said, holding out his hand for the keys.

Randolph handed over the key to his new Mercedes SUV. “It’s on the third floor of the parking garage.”

Wes nodded, then jogged out into the hall, happy to be useful.

He heard Meg’s voice and smelled her citrusy perfume just before she and her lab-coated father came around the corner. She saw him and stopped. “Wes?”

“Hi.”

Her father, Dr. Harold Vincent, was a big deal in the genetics field. He and Wes had crossed paths—and words—a few times during Wes’s pursuit of Meg.

“Daddy, you remember Wesley Wren,” Meg said.

Dr. Vincent’s mouth flattened. “I sure do.” His gaze darted to Wes’s foot. “Nice ankle bracelet.”

Wes glanced down to see his ankle monitor showing below his pants leg. Minus ten.

Then the man zeroed in on the big honking Mercedes keychain Wes held. “Let me guess, you’re here posing as a doctor and you managed to borrow his vehicle for a few hours?”

He was referring to the time Wes had stolen a doctor’s lab coat and nametag in order to crash a lecture Dr. Vincent had given.

“Daddy,” Meg said in a reproachful voice.

Wes stabbed at his glasses. “Uh, no.”

The door to the waiting room opened and his parents appeared. His mom’s hand was tucked contentedly around his dad’s elbow, but her pretty face was lined with fatigue. His dad glanced at Meg and her father, then nodded politely.

“Dad, this is Meg Vincent,” Wes said. “Meg and I work together at the city IT department.
